Pumping with Knowledge: Year 6 Explore the Circulatory System!

6th March 2025
This half term, our Year 6 pupils are diving into the fascinating world of the human circulatory system. They are learning about the components of blood, the function of the heart, and how blood is transported around the body. The lessons also explore the importance of a healthy diet and lifestyle, highlighting how nutrients and water travel through the body to keep us strong and well.
To bring this learning to life, our recent SPLAT (Stay, Play and Learn Together) session gave pupils and parents the chance to create their own 'blood'! Using a hands-on approach, they combined different materials to represent the four key components:
  • Plasma – represented by coloured water, carrying nutrients and waste.
  • Red blood cells – symbolised by Cheerios, delivering oxygen.
  • White blood cells – marshmallows, standing in for our immune defenders.
  • Platelets – raisins, demonstrating how blood clots to heal wounds.
To complete their ‘blood mixture’, they added rice to represent the essential nutrients, hormones, and waste products that travel in our bloodstream.
This exciting SPLAT session helped pupils understand how blood works as a transport system, reinforcing key scientific knowledge in a fun and engaging way. We loved seeing the enthusiasm from both children and parents—what a fantastic way to bring science to life!
