Literacy

In Key Stage 1 we use the Read Write Inc scheme to assist in the teaching of phonics. On 24th October 2016 we were delighted to receive a letter from the Department of Education (click here to read) congratulating us on our high standard of achievement in the 2016 phonics screening check. With 97% of our pupils reaching or exceeding the pass mark, we are in the top 8% of all primary schools in the country.

In 2016 we were awarded the status of 'Model School' by Read Write Inc. To be recognised in such a way, we have to demonstrate that we:

  • Teach Read Write Inc. Phonics five days a week to a consistently high standard
  • Release¬†our literacy co-ordinator to demonstrate lessons and coach staff - both internal and external
  • Hold weekly masterclasses to embed effective teaching principles.

In Key Stage 1 we use the Oxford Reading Tree reading scheme to progress reading skills. It is the number one reading programme in the UK and has systematic phonics at its heart. Over 800 books provide a varied choice of writing styles, genres and artwork styles at every level, enabling the children to become confident readers.
